Campus Operations

Health and safety protocols for the MIT campus

The following protocols remain in place to keep the risk of infection on our campus low. Here, you’ll find guidelines related to what will be expected of you as a member of our community, and you can also learn what MIT is doing to safeguard overall community health.

Campus access

Staff, faculty, students, and visitors accessing the MIT Cambridge campus need to complete the required steps outlined in the MIT Covid Pass access management system. Learn more about Campus Access.

Face coverings and social distancing

Please respect ones decision to mask. You are not required to wear a face covering indoors on campus. Face coverings are required for non-vaccinated persons. In accordance with current CDC guidance and City of Cambridge protocols. Read the MIT PPE policy statement for full details, including exceptions. MIT has lifted all Covid-era restrictions on social distancing.

See the Covid Apps site for the latest information on testing times at MIT Medical. Learn more about Health & Testing.

Cleaning protocols

All high-touch surfaces (handrails, elevator buttons, door handles, etc.) in all common areas on campus (main corridors, main lobbies, elevators, restrooms) are cleaned and disinfected daily, Monday through Friday. High-touch surfaces in instructional spaces and bathrooms are cleaned and disinfected twice daily, Monday through Friday. Additional cleaning is conducted in the Stata student street and the Infinite Corridor throughout the day, Monday through Friday. High-quality masks are provided around the institute as well as hand sanitizing stations.

If you have COVID-19 Symptoms:

  • Report symptoms – even very mild symptoms – in Covid Pass or the Atlas mobile app.

  • Take a Covid test. If you’re on campus, you can test at MIT. Test drop-off is available from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, in W20 or at the MIT Medical trailer; both locations are open to the public during normal business hours (no card access required). If you’re not currently coming to campus, obtain a test from your local pharmacy or health care provider.

  • Stay home until you receive a test result. If you test positive, follow the instructions (“If you test positive”).

Symptoms may include: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea.

See update to testing positive policy.

Building 9 Ventilation

MIT Facilities has done a thorough survey of spaces and HVAC equipment in preparation for the fall return to campus. The recent renovations in Building 9 have ensured that we have up-to-date equipment and well functioning ventilation. MIT is also relying on a system of mandatory vaccination/booster, voluntary mask-wearing and testing to manage what is now an endemic disease. If employees remain at home when not feeling well and wash their hands frequently, our level of protection will be excellent.

Employees with shared offices can choose to limit their simultaneous occupancy if concerns remain, but there is no current MIT requirement or guideline for doing this. At the SA+P, we are following MIT’s COVID policies, which are being reviewed continually and will be updated as circumstances change.

Shuttle cleaning

Currently, the MIT shuttle vehicles receive a full interior cleaning by an outside company once a week. In addition, shuttle drivers clean high-touch surfaces at every shift change.

Events

Events are allowed and welcomed on and off campus.

Internal events for MIT departments, labs, centers, faculty, and student organizations may now be held on campus. Events organized by external groups are also permitted if, in keeping with MIT Policies and Procedures, they are sponsored by recognized student groups or faculty and staff with departmental approval.
