MIT Grading

The MIT Grading System

Grades at MIT may be given with plus/minus designations (B-, B, B+), however only the full letter grade, without these designations, appear on a student's official transcript.

All MSRED students are expected to obtain at least a 4.0 out of 5.0 (B average) scale. Students who do not maintain good academic standing may be subject to academic warnings and/or probation.

The required in the MSRED Core course is a B.

Grade Guide

MG (Missing Grade)
If a student has not completed all the coursework in you class, you can simply leave the grade blank and still submit your grade sheet. the grade will show up as MG (Missing Grade) on the transcript. It will be up to the student to clear this up by completing the work. A late change of grade can be made at that time.

I (Incomplete)
Use when a student has completed most of the course work but has neglected to complete the course. You will need to enter the percentage of the course the student has completed and the grade they have earned thus far. A student has until the start of the next semester to resolve a grade. If they fail to do so, the grade will default to the
provisional grade you gave when entering the Incomplete.

For example, if a student as earned a C at the time of grading and has work still due, their grade will read as "I/C" on the transcript. If they complete the overdue work before the start of the next semester, you can enter a late grade. If they earn a B, the transcript will then read "I/B." The I grade remains on their transcript.

MG (Missing Grade) vs. I (Incomplete)

By leaving the grade blank, the student will not have their grade automatically updated at the start of the following semester. For the incomplete grade, the provisional grade you gace the student will become the final grade if they do not submit the missing work.

Also the "MG" will be replaced with the letter grade once the work is complete.

The "I" grade will always remain on the transcript, attached to the final grade.

O (Absent)
This is equivilent to an F. You may give an O grade to a student if they are unable to complete work in a timely manner due to circumstances over which they have no control (family emergency, illness.) The "O" grade has the same impact on their GPA as an F. However, once resolved, the "O" is not longer on the transcript and is replaced by a letter grade.

OX (Absent Excused)
Students who receive an "O" have to petition for an "OX" in advance. Often "O" grades are converted to "OX" after the fact (i.e., student missed final due to emergency). Faculty gives an "O" and studnet petitions to convert to "OX." Then student completed work and the "OX' is converted to letter grade (or to P/D/F)

J or U (Use for incomplete thesis)
If a student is regsitered for thesis and is unable to submit in time,
J indicates satisfactory and U unsatisfactory progress.
